Description
Apple hand pies are individual pastries filled with a spiced apple mixture. This recipe offers a simple method for creating these treats at home.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 4 medium apples, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.
- Gently stir in the melted butter until the apple mixture is evenly coated.
- Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface.
- Using a 4-inch round cookie cutter or a knife, cut out circles from the puff pastry.
- Place a spoonful of the apple mixture in the center of half of the pastry circles.
- Brush the edges of the filled pastry circles with the beaten egg.
- Top with the remaining pastry circles and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Brush the tops of the hand pies with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Cut a small slit in the top of each hand pie to allow steam to escape.
- Place the hand pies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the hand pies cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
- Add a drizzle of caramel after baking for a caramel apple hand pie variation.
- Air fryer: Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Cook for 12-15 minutes.
- For mini apple pies, use a smaller cookie cutter.
