Description
Beef Gyudon is a quick and easy Japanese rice bowl dish. Thinly sliced beef is simmered in a savory-sweet sauce and served over rice.
Ingredients

- 1 lb thinly sliced beef
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup mirin
- 2 tablespoons sake
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup water
- 4 cups cooked rice
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onion to the saucepan and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the thinly sliced beef to the saucepan and cook until the beef is cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
- Serve the beef and onion mixture over bowls of cooked rice.
- Garnish with sliced green onions.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use dashi instead of water.
- Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less sugar.
- Serve with a side of pickled ginger (beni shoga).
