Description

This baked mac and cheese recipe features a creamy, rich sauce and a golden, bubbly topping. It’s a comforting dish perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce has thickened. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese and Gruyere cheese until melted and smooth.
  5. Add cooked macaroni to cheese sauce and stir to combine.
  6. Pour macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the top.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of cheeses such as sharp cheddar, Gruyere, and Parmesan.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce for a little heat.
  • You can prepare this dish ahead of time and bake it later.
