Description
Make Tanghulu, a popular Chinese street snack, easily at home. This recipe provides a simple method to create this sweet and crunchy treat using your favorite fruits.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 pound assorted fruits (strawberries, grapes, mandarin oranges, etc.), washed and dried
- Optional: sesame seeds or edible glitter for decoration
Instructions
- Prepare your fruit by washing and drying it thoroughly. Skewer the fruit.
- Combine sugar and water in a saucepan.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat without stirring. Allow it to boil until it reaches a light amber color (about 15-20 minutes). Use a candy thermometer to reach 300°F (149°C).
- Quickly dip the skewered fruit into the hot sugar syrup, coating evenly.
- Place the dipped fruit on a silicone mat or parchment paper to cool and harden.
- Optional: Sprinkle with sesame seeds or edible glitter before the sugar hardens.
- Let the Tanghulu cool completely before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the fruit is completely dry for the sugar to adhere properly.
- Do not stir the sugar syrup while it’s heating, as this can cause crystallization.
- Work quickly once the sugar syrup is ready, as it hardens fast.
- If the sugar hardens in the pot, add a tablespoon of water and reheat gently.
